Music

Music has always been very important to me. Craig, at Booknotes, feels the same way and has been posting music comments on his blog. He invited comments from others which resulted in my running off at the keybord with a piece about how music has been in my life that is titled Subject:music.

This exercise prompted me to gather all the comments I've made about music in gordon.coale into one place. Listen to the music. And don't forget to listen to TestingTesting.

Les Paul
A lot of people know the Gibson guitars with the name Les Paul on them. Many, many more know the music that has come from these guitars — from musicians such as Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck. I suspect most don't know about the man behind the name. Not only was he instrumental (pun intended) in developing the solid body electric guitar, but he developed many of the recording techniques used by all rock musicians — and he is a *killer* guitar player.

Warren Zevon
I've listened to a lot of music, but I haven't heard it all. Warren Zevon is one of those that I hadn't really listened to — until now. Zoe recently mentioned him and then Joseph Duemer linked to an article about him in American Samizdat (article link below.) I went to Rhapsody and they had six Warren Zevon albums. I'm just finishing listening to the last one. I'm just blown away. The albums in Rhapsody don't include his latest, which I will have to buy. No problem.

More music
I've gone through life without ever taking music lessons. Although I've never played music, it has always been very important in my life. I listen to Patsy Cline and Karlheinz Stockhausen, Bill Evans and the Dead Kennedys. I listen to a lot of different stuff.

Acoustic Music
While I was buying CDs for Adam and Megon, I treated myself to Tone Poems III: The Sounds of the Great Slide & Resophonic Instruments. I'm a fan of National metal body guitars and dobros. This also has David Grisman, master of Dawg Music, on it. It was a bigger treat than expected.

Louis Armstrong
Hot Fives And Sevens

Trying to say something fresh about these recordings, arguably (though not very arguably) the most important set of recordings in the history of jazz, is a little like trying to make a new comment about the Mona Lisa or Bach's B Minor Mass. Miles Davis once famously said, "You can't play anything on the horn that Louis hasn't played...even modern," and these recordings bear out that statement.
