War Around

Preparing to leave
Letter dated
November 1, 1943

Letter to Commander F. John Long, USNR
Photographic Section
Office of Public Relations

Dear Jack:

You asked no to write to remind you to put me on the list for the Bureau of Naval Personnel Bulletin edited by Commander Norvelle W. Sharpe, so that Elizabeth [Griff's wife] may get them regularly at this address and hold them for me. You also asked me to remind you to send me a copy of the Bulletin already published with the article on the Combat Artists, including the reproduction of the REUBEN JAMES.

If there is any chance of my flying to London, which I would be very happy to do, is there any way of knowing in advance so that I can ship my footlocker and heavy gear ahead. I do hope, if it is not feasible for me to fly, that I may go in a cruiser as I have covered transports, convoys and destroyers already.

I am starting all my "shots" tomorrow, and can take the final physical when I am in Washington as I am advised to take the shots first.

The galley proofs arrive this afternoon, so that everything will be in splendid shape when I leave. Do please give me a ring when you come to New York and let me know what time you want me to meet you at the Modern Museum on November 9th.

Hope all goes well with the London arrangements, for if I don't get off soon I will miss the whole damn war. It was grand seeing you the other day and I have been watching for grasshoppers sever since.

Best regards

Griffith Baily Coale
